Matthew shared how Jesus saw the “great faith” of the centurion and said, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” Matthew continued, “And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever”, and in chapter eight and verse fifteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus, “touched” Peter's mother-in-law's “hand, and the fever left her” where we read:
And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
The verse reads, “And he touched her hand, and the fever left her:” Matthew began with the words, “and he touched” or “and Jesus fastened himself, adhered and clung to” “her hand” which means “Peter's mother-in-law's hand”, “and the fever” or “and the fire like temperature within her body” “left her” which means “departed from and went away from Peter's mother-in-law”. Jesus needed only to “touch” Peter's mother-in-law's “hand”, and the “fever” departed from her.
The verse goes on to say, “and she arose, and ministered unto them.” Matthew continued with the words, “and she arose” or “and Peter's mother-in-law aroused from sleep, rose and stood up”, “and ministered” which means “and served, waited upon and prepared food and drink” “unto them” or “to Jesus, Peter and the other disciples who were with them”. Matthew shared how Peter's mother-in-law got up from lying down and served Jesus, Peter and the others with them.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the full impact of Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law. Not only did the “fever” leave her, but she could be about her normal activities as well. Jesus is able to heal and restore health to people so they may be about their daily tasks, and one of the greatest ways to show appreciation for His “healing touch” is to “serve” Him and others. God desires everyone to have this kind of relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when He provides healing, let all who receive from Him be willing to “serve” in return.
Next time Matthew shares how people brought to Jesus, “many that were possessed with devils:” and He “healed all that were sick”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
