Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they?”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-seven of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus asked His disciples who among them could, “add one cubit unto his stature” where we read:
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
The verse reads, “Which of you by taking thought ...” Matthew began with the words, “which of you” which means “who among the disciples” “by taking thought” or “through being anxious and troubled with cares”. Jesus began the first part of this question to His disciples by asking who among them by being “worried” could do what He is about to ask.
The verse goes on to say, “... can add one cubit unto his stature?” Matthew added the words, “can add” or “is able to annex and increase” “one cubit” which means “one single measure of length equal to distance from the joint of the elbow to the time of the middle finger or about eighteen inches” “to his stature” or “to their size”? Jesus questioned His disciples concerning their ability to add “eighteen” inches to their “height”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus inquired who among His disciples could add “one cubit” or “eighteen inches” to their “height”. The obvious answer is “none”, and because they did not have that power, why would they think they could not rely upon God? God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and those who yield their lives to Him shall not only be content with the “height” He has given them, but they shall realize their inability to alter that which they have no power to do.
Next time Jesus asks His disciples, “why take you thought for raiment?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
