Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “the light of the body is the eye” where we read:
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light.
The verse reads, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, ...” Matthew began with the words, “the light” which means “the candle, lamp or illumination” “of the body” or “pertaining to the physical body” “is the eye” which refers to “is the vision and sight which the eye provides”: “if therefore” or “whether then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so” “your eye” which refers to “the disciples' eye” “be single” or “is whole, proper, fulfilling its office and unadulterated”. Jesus told His disciples their “eye” gave “vision and insight” to the entire body, and He presented the condition as to whether their “eye” was “unadulterated” or “blurred”.
The verse goes on to say, “... your whole body shall be full of light.” Matthew added the words, “your whole body” or “the disciples' entire and complete physical body” “shall be full of light” which means “will be composed of light, of a bright character and well lit”. Jesus shared that if the disciples had an “unadulterated” “eye”, their entire physical being would be filled with the “light” the “eye” provides..
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the entire world of a person is affected by how they are seeing things. If their “eye” is “adulterated”, they have blurred vision, and are subject to all sorts of contrary behaviors and attitudes. If their “eye” is “clean” or “clear”, they see properly, and their attitudes and actions correspond accordingly. God desires a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, He is able to cleanse and purify any “uncleanness” that is within that person's vision. May all who read these words come to know the “Savior and Lord” and understand the value of the “unadulterated” “eye”.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples what happens, “if your eye is evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
