Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is,
and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-one of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “take not thought” concerning “eating, drinking and being clothed” where we read:Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or,
What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
The verse reads, “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat?” Matthew began with the word, “therefore” which means “then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so” “take no thought” or “do not be anxious, troubled with cares and seeking one's own interests” “saying” which means “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and questioning”, “what shall we eat” which means “whatever what would the disciples consume or devour”? Jesus told His disciples not to have “anxious thoughts, concerns or worries” about what they would “eat”.
The verse continues, “What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” Matthew added the words, “what shall we drink” which means “whatever would the disciples imbibe”? “or, wherewithal” which refers to “or in what way and how” “shall we be clothed” or “with what clothes would the disciples put on and array themselves”. Jesus told His disciples not to have “anxious thoughts” toward what they would “drink” or how would they be “clothed”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus repeated His idea about the disciples not “worrying” over “eating, drinking and being clothed”. God desires to have every person be in a relationship with His Son Jesus, and when they align with Him in faith, He promises to provide every need for food, drink and clothes according to His riches in glory.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things” and more, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
