Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.” Jesus added, “But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-four of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof” where we read:
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
The verse reads, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” Matthew began with the words, “take therefore no thought” or “be anxious, troubled with cares and seeking to promote one's own interest” “for the morrow” which means “on behalf of the next day or tomorrow”: “for” or “because, since, on account of and consequently” “the morrow” which means “the next day or tomorrow” “shall take thought” or “will be anxious, troubled with cares and seeking to promote one's own interest” “for the things” which means “on behalf of the happenings and occurrences” “of itself” or “pertaining to the morrow”. Jesus repeated the idea of not having “anxious thoughts” concerning “tomorrow” because “tomorrow's” “events, happenings and occurrences” would be taken care of as they come.
The verse continues, “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew added the words, “sufficient” or “suffice and enough” “unto the day” which means “toward the present day” “is the evil” which refers to “belongs and exists the malignity, malice, ill-will, desire to injure, wickedness and trouble” “thereof” which means “within the day”. Jesus told His disciples the “current day” they were living in had “enough” “ill-wills, wickedness and troubles” within it.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired for His disciples not to “worry” about “future” things. Each “day” presents it's own challenges, and time and energy expended upon events which have not arrived takes away from efforts that may be put toward today. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and when they submit to Him through “faith and trust” in Him, they have all they need to manage the issues of the present day.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Jesus tells His disciples, “Judge not, lest you be judged” and more, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
