Matthew shared, “when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.” In chapter eight and verse sixteen of his book, Matthew shared how, “when the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils” where we read:
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:
and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
The verse reads, “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:” Matthew began with the word, “when” or “at the time and moment” “the even was come” which means “the evening time arrived and appeared”, “they brought unto him” or “people carried to Jesus” “many that were possessed with devils” which means “a large group of people who were under the power of a demon or vexed with a devil”. Matthew shared how there was brought “demon possessed” people to Jesus toward the end of the day.
The verse continues, “and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:” Matthew added the words, “and he cast out” or “and Jesus threw out, scattered and drove out” “the spirits” which means “evil and wicked spirits” “with his word” or “by use of Jesus' speech and living voice which embodies a conception or idea”, “and healed all” which refers to “and cured and restored to health each, every, the whole and everyone” “that were sick” or “who were miserable, ill and reviled”. Matthew shared how Jesus “scattered” the “demons” with His “word” and “cured” everyone who was “ill” .
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see another demonstration of the power of Jesus. He “cast demons out” of people and “healed” every “sick” person who was brought to him . Jesus is the Messiah, and no one else was able to attend to the misery of mankind like Him. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and each time we see examples of Him exercising His power over sickness, disease and demonic possession, He proves that He is who He claims to be. May all who read these words consider this awesome “Savior and Lord” who so identifies with the misery of man that He came to remove it from them.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus doing these things, “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
