The Mote and the Beam Matthew 7:3

Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again”, and in chapter seven and verse three of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye” where we read:

And why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye,

but consider not the beam that is in your own eye?

The verse reads, And why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye, ... Matthew began with the words, “and why” or “and for what purpose and reason” “behold you” which means “to the disciples see, discern, look, gaze at and perceive” “the mote” or “the dry stalk, twig or speck” “that is in” or “that is within” “your brother's eye” which refers to “the disciples' fellow believer's eye who is united by the bond of affection”. Jesus questioned why the disciples were “looking at” and “discerning” the “speck” that is within the disciples' fellow believers' eye.

The verse continues, “... but consider not the beam that is in your own eye?” Matthew added the word, “but” or “moreover and now” “consider not” which means “do not perceive, remark, observe and understand” “the beam” or “the stick of timber” “that is in” which means “which is within” “your own eye” or “the disciples' own personal eye”? Jesus added the idea that the disciples were not “perceiving” the “log or beam” in their “own eye”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted His disciples to perceive the “log” that was obstructing their own view before they noticed a “speck” that was within other brother's eyes. God desires to have a relationship with every person through a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ, and when they understand that He has the best view for “judging” others, no one else's “observation” will alter proper vision.

Next time Jesus asks His disciples how they can say, Let me pull out the mote out of your eye; and, behold, a beam is in your own eye?” and more, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
