Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they?” Jesus continued by asking, “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take you thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-nine of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these” where we read:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
The verse reads, “And yet I say unto you, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and yet I say” which means “and moreover Jesus utters, declares and proclaims” “unto you” or “toward His disciples”. Jesus again provided an overriding word to His disciples.
The verse continues, “... That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Matthew added the words, “that even Solomon” or “so neither and not even Solomon whose name means peaceful and was the son of King David” “in all” which means “within each, every, any, the whole and everyone of” “his glory” or “Solomon's splendor, brightness and honor” “was not arrayed” which means “surrounded with garments and clothed” “like one of these” or “in a similar way as the lily of the field”. Jesus told His disciples that “Solomon”, who was the richest man who ever lived, was not “clothed” as “gloriously” as “one” of the “lilies of the field”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we note Jesus' comparison to the “glory” of “Solomon” who was adorned in the finest of outerwear among people to “one” “lily of the field”. Though he was clothed with the best that money could buy, “Solomon” paled in comparison to “one single” “flower”. God loves people, and He wants to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus, and because He is the “Creator” of all things, He is able to give more “glory” to a single “flower” than any person shall ever gain in being arrayed.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples what happens, “if God so clothe the grass of the field” the lilies, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
