Advice on What is Expedient 2 Corinthians 8:10

Paul the apostle spoke to the church members in Corinth concerning, “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich”, and in chapter eight and verse ten of Second Corinthians, Paul gives the Corinthian church members his“advice: for this is expedient for” them where we read:

And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you,
who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.

The verse begins, And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, ...” Paul began with the word, “and herein” which means “and with this” “I give” which means “Paul bestowed, granted, supplied and furnished” “my advice” which means “Paul's faculty of knowledge, mind, reason, view, judgment and opinion” “for this is expedient” which means “because the graceful giving of Jesus who was rich and became poor is helpful and profitable” “for you” which refers to “the church members”. Paul gave his opinion and view to the church members concerning that which is profitable and helpful to them.

The verse continues, “... who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago. Paul added the words, “who have begun before” which means “the church members who commenced already”, “not only to do” or “not alone to make, produce, construct, form or fashion” “but also” or “even as and indeed in addition” “to be forward” or “to will, have in mind and intend” “a year ago” which refers to “one year prior to this time”. Paul referred to the church members who not only started to give but also intended to do so a year earlier.

When we consider upon these words of Paul, we see how he encouraged the church members in their intention and performance of giving. The church in Corinth intended to give in the previous year, and now they were acting upon their purpose. Jesus Christ desires for His church to “give” toward the ministry, and when a person comes to know Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior”, they shall not only “intend” to provide for others within it, but they shall act upon their “goals”.

Next time Paul shares with the church members about, “performance and readiness, so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
