Binding and Loosing on Earth - Matthew 18:18

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone: if he shall hear you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto you as an heathen man and a publican”, and in chapter eighteen and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples about, “binding and loosing on earth” where we read:

Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven:

and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The verse reads, Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven:”. Matthew began with the word, “verily” or “truly and surely” “I say” which means “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims”“unto you” or “to Jesus' disciples”, “whatsoever” which means “as far as and how much and many” “you shall bind” or “the disciples tie, fasten with chains and put under obligation, law and duty” “on earth” which means “upon the world, country, territory and region” “shall be bound” or “will be tied, fastened with chains and put under obligation, law and duty” “in heaven” which means “the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples whatever thing they would “tie, fasten and put under obligation” on the “earth” would be done within the heavenly region.

The verse goes on to say, and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew continued with the words, “and whatsoever” or “as far as and how much and many” “you shall loose” which means “the disciple will untie, unbind, release from bonds and set free” “on earth” or “upon the world, country, territory and region” “shall be loosed” which means “untied, unbound, released from bonds and set free” “in heaven” or “within the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus said “whatever thing” the disciples “set free and released from bonds” upon the “earth” would be done in the “heavenly region”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see the power to “bind and loose” that was given to the disciples by Jesus. The implication is there are certain things that need to be “bound”, and others that need to be “set free”. The disciples were to determine which one was needed, and when they acted either way “on earth”, the same was done in the spiritual world of “heaven”. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when a person is freed from their “blindness” to spiritually see, they will yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus tells what happens, “if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
