Great is the Minister - Matthew 20:26

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over” other people, “and they that are great exercise authority upon them”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-six of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister” where we read:

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

The verse reads, But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “but” or “nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and” “it shall not be so among you” which means “having rule, power and authority will not exist, come to pass or happen with the disciples of Jesus”: “but whosoever” or “moreover and whatever person whether male or female” “will be great” or “shall exist with great stature, effort, virtue, authority and power” “among you” which means “with the disciples of Jesus”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the idea of “ruling and power” over other people shall not be the way His disciples would be with one another.

The verse goes on to say, “... let him be your minister;” Matthew added the words, “let him” or “allow and permit that person who would be of great stature and power” “be your minister” which means “exist as the disciples' servant, waiter and attendant”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the “greatest” among the disciples would be the one who was the “servant” to all the rest of them.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' Kingdom is much different than the world's. People vie for power, privilege and authority over others, and many care little about those they step on to reach their heights of power. Jesus told His disciples the “greatest” among them would be their “servant” or “slave”, and this pattern is not well accepted today. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and He came in the flesh to “serve” mankind and to save them from their sins. If a person desires to be like God, they should learn Jesus' principle and “minister” to others in any way possible.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus said, “whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
