The Penny a Day Agreement - Matthew 20:2

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard”, and in chapter twenty and verse two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus said the householder, “agreed with the laborers for a penny a day” where we read:

And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

The verse reads, And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he had agreed” which means “the householder made and agreement and bargain” “with the laborers” which refers to “with the workers” “for a penny a day” or “with a denarius which means counting ten for each sunrise to sunset worked”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “master of the house” made an agreement for the wages the workers should receive.

The verse goes on to say, “... he sent them into his vineyard.” Matthew continued with the words, “he sent them” or “the householder ordered, appointed and dismissed the workers” “into his vineyard” which means “in to his grapevine field”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the “laborers” were sent into the “vine fields” after the “master of the house” agreed with them concerning their pay.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the “householder” made an agreement with his workers for their “wages” and sent then into his fields. Like God who brings people into His Kingdom through His Son Jesus, He promises “everlasting life” for all submit their lives to Him. Afterward they begin their labor in His Kingdom. God desires every person to have a loving personal relationship with Him, and when they yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord”, and He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (See Ephesians 3:20) as they yield their lives to Him.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus said the householder , “went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
