Who Then Can be Saved? - Matthew 19:25

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew shares how the disciples asked, “who then can be saved?” where we read:

When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

The verse reads, When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “when” or “at the time and moment” “his disciples heard it” “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants were endowed with the faculty for hearing, not deaf, understood and perceived what Jesus said” “they” which refers to “Jesus' disciples” “were exceedingly amazed” or “vehemently, in a high degree, much, greatly and sorely blown away, struck with panic, amazed and astonished”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” were struck with “panic and awe” as they considered what Jesus said.

The verse goes on to say, “... saying, Who then can be saved?” Matthew continued with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “who then” which means “what person whether male or female therefore” “can be saved” or “is able to be kept safe, rescued from danger or destruction, made well and rescued”? Matthew wrote how Jesus's “disciples” wondered “what person” could ever be “rescued from danger and destruction”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples knew most people depend upon their “material” things to “save them” rather than God Himself. God, through His Son Jesus, is the only One who is able to “save” people eternally, and all other dependancies fail to rescue mankind from his eternal fate. Jesus' disciples understood that without some divine intervention, “age abiding eternal life” is beyond mankind's ability to obtain. That is why God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of mankind, and those who receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall receive the gift of “everlasting life” and be “eternally saved”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “with men it is impossible; but with God all things are possible”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
