The Son of Man Will Be Betrayed - Matthew 20:18

Matthew the apostle wrote how, Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,”, and in chapter twenty and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “the Son of man shall be betrayed” where we read:

Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

The verse reads, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “behold” or “lo and see”, “we go up” which means “Jesus and His twelve disciples” “go up” or “ascend” “to Jerusalem” which means “toward Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”: “and the Son of man” or “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is God's Son” “shall be betrayed” which means “will be delivered and given over treacherously” “unto the chief priests” which were “to the high priest who were comprised in addition to one holding the high priestly office, both those who had previously discharged it and although disposed, continued to have great power in the State, as well as the members of the families from which high priest were created provided that they had much influence in public affairs” “and unto the scribes” or “and to the clerks, scribes, especially public servants, secretaries and recorders whose office and influence differed in different states”. Matthew shared how Jesus said He and His disciples were traveling to Jerusalem so He could be “delivered over” to the “high priests” and “scribes” who were the religious leaders.

The verse continues, “... and they shall condemn him to death,” Matthew added the words, “and they shall condemn him” or “and the chief priests and the scribes will damn and give judgment against Jesus as being worthy of punishment” “to death” which means “to be executed and die”. Matthew wrote how Jesus told His disciples the “high priests and scribes” would bring life taking judgment against Him.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew the fate He was facing in Jerusalem. He understood how the religious leaders, “the high priests and scribes”, would “condemn” Him to die, and yet, He continued His path to Jerusalem. God deliberately sent His Son Jesus to “die” for the sins of all mankind, and Jesus knew that His time was near for completing that task. Though the “high priests and scribes” were used by God to carry out His plan of “salvation” for people, Jesus continued on His path. Everyone who realizes the great commitment Jesus extended to “save” them from their sins, asks for forgiveness, and clings to, relies upon and trusts in Him shall be saved. Those who do not are like the “high priests and scribes” who “betray” Jesus even to this day.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus said the chief priests and the scribes shall, “deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
