The Mother of Zebedee's Children - Matthew 20:20

Matthew the apostle wrote how, Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty of his book, Matthew shares how, “the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons” came to Jesus where we read:

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons,

worshiping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

The verse reads, Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “then came to him” or “Jesus at that time and moment was approached by” “the mother” which means “the female generator and progenitor” “of Zebedee's children” or “belonging to the offspring of Zebedee whose name means my gift and was the son of James the Great and John the apostle” “with her sons” which means “alongside the mother of Zebedee's male offsprings and descendants”. Matthew shared how Jesus was approached by the mother of “Zebedee's” sons, and her sons, James and John, were alongside her.

The verse continues, “... worshiping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.” Matthew added the words, “worshiping him” or “reverencing, paying homage to, making obeisance and respect”, “and desiring” which means “asking, begging, calling for, craving and requiring” “a certain thing” or “a particular request” “of him” which refers to “Jesus”. Matthew wrote how the “mother of Zebedee's children” “honored and reverenced” Jesus because she wanted Him to do something for her.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this mother of the apostles “James the Great and John” came to Jesus, “worshiped” Him, and desired that He would do something for her. As most mothers, this woman wanted the best for her children, and the “mother of Zebedee's children” was no different. God loves people to approach Him, reverence Him and seek advantage of Him, and He is willing for every person to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. When they turn from their sins and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, God is willing to receive all who come to Him in faith.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus said to the mother of Zebedee's children, “what do you desire?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
