Great Multitudes and Healing - Matthew 19:2

After Jesus continued telling the story about the unforgiving servant, Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus added to the story with the king asking, “Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if you from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan”, and in chapter nineteen and verse two of his book, Matthew shares about, “great multitudes” and Jesus “healing them there” where we read:

And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

The verse reads, And great multitudes followed him;”. Matthew began with the words, “and great multitudes” or “and massive crowds of people” “followed him” which means “joined and accompanied Jesus”. Matthew shared how Jesus drew another large crowd of people around Him.

The verse goes on to say, and he healed them there.” Matthew continued with the words, “and he healed them” or “and Jesus cured, made whole and restored the people to health” “there” which means “in the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan”. Matthew wrote how Jesus “restored” people who were ill to health again.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the popularity and notoriety of Jesus grew by word of mouth, and people desired to be around Him and be restored to health. Those who take the time to find out who Jesus is and what He does will be attracted to Him, and those who are wise shall follow the example of this “multitude” and “accompany” Him wherever He leads.

Next time Matthew shares how the Pharisees ask Jesus, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
