Twelve Thrones - Matthew 19:28

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you; what shall we have therefore?”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-eight of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus responded to Peter and said His disciples would, “sit upon twelve thrones” where we read:

And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That you which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

The verse reads, And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That you which have followed me, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which refers to “to His disciples”, “verily” or “truly or surely” “I say” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto you” or “to His disciples”, “that you which have followed me” which means “that the disciples who joined Jesus as His attendants, accompanied Him and sided with His party”. Matthew shared how Jesus certified the following would happen to His “disciples” who “followed” Him.

The verse continues, “... in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory,” Matthew added the words, “in the regeneration” or “in the new birth, renewal, re-creation and renovation of the earth” “when” which means “at the time and moment” “the Son of man” which refers to “Jesus who is the Son of God” “shall sit” which means “would sojourn and settle down” “in the throne” or “in the chair of state having a footstool which is assigned to kings with kingly power or royalty” “of his glory” which means “Jesus' judgment, view, estimate, honor, splendor and brightness”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said when there is a “renewal and and re-creation” of all things, Jesus will be seated upon His “splendorous and brilliant” “throne”.

Finally the verse says, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Mark ended this verse with the words, “you also” or “the disciples even and indeed” “shall sit” which means “will be seated” “upon twelve thrones” or “on twelve chairs of state having a footstool which are assigned to kings with kingly power or royalty”, “judging” which means “separating, putting asunder, selecting, redeeming and resolving” “the twelve tribes” or “the twelve offshoots, races, clans, kindreds and tribe” “of Israel” which refers to “belonging the family or descendants of Israel whose name means he shall be a prince of God”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples they “also” would be seated upon “twelve thrones”, and their responsibility would be to “rule” over “Israel”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus forecast the future for Himself and for His disciples. Jesus promised with certainty that He will be seated upon His “throne”, and His disciples will sit on “twelve thrones” and rule over “Israel” when the world is “re-created”. Jesus came to the earth to save people from their sins and to provide them with “everlasting life”. God desires for every person to receive His Son Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”, and when they submit their lives to Him, He has a future planned that will be beyond their comprehension to conceive or understand.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares about, “forsaking houses, brethren, sisters, fathers, mother, wife, children and land for His sake”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
