Moses' Writing of Divorcement - Matthew 19:7

Matthew the apostle wrote how, The Pharisees also came unto” Jesus” tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder”, and in chapter nineteen and verse seven of his book, Matthew shares how the Pharisees asked, “why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement” where we read:

They say unto him, Why did Moses then command

to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

The verse reads, They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement,”. Matthew began with the words, “they say” or “the Pharisees who questioned Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”, “why” or “for what reason and cause” “did Moses then” which means “did the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion whose name means drawing out therefore, wherefore, accordingly and consequently” “command” or “enjoin or order to be done” “to give” which means “to bestow, grant, supply and furnish” “a writing” or “a small book, scroll, written document or a sheet on which something is written” “of divorcement” which refers to “repudiation or divorce”. Matthew shared how the Pharisees questioned Jesus as to the reason that Moses ordered people to issue “divorce papers or documents”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and to put her away?” Matthew added the words, “and to put her away” which means “set free, dismiss, detain no longer, set at liberty and release his wife”. Matthew wrote how the Pharisees included “setting free” their wife as an addition to their question to Jesus.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the Pharisees wondered why Moses commanded that divorce papers were to be given to a wife who displeased her husband, and he was to release her from being married to him. This may seen like an innocent question at first glance, however, we must keep in mind the Pharisees were always attempting to trap Jesus in some way. Jesus will answer their question in the next verse, and let us remember that God Almighty wants everyone to love one another. He gave His Son Jesus to provide forgiveness for the sins, errors and wrongs people did and do against Him, and those who trust in, rely upon and cling to Him shall not only be forgiven but be granted “everlasting life”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus answered the Pharisees, “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
