Where Two or Three are Gathered in Jesus' Name - Matthew 18:20

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told what happens, “where two or three are gathered in my name” where we read:

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

The verse reads, For where two or three are gathered together in my name, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “for” or “because, since and on account that” “where two or three” which means “the place where two or three of Jesus' disciples”“are gathered together” or “are assembled and collected” “in my name” which means “in the name which is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to when “two or three” of His disciples are “assembled” in His name.

The verse continues, “... there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew continued with the words, “there am I” or “at that place and time Jesus is” “in the midst of” which means “in the middle of and among” “them” or “the two or three disciples of Jesus who are gathered together”. Matthew shared how Jesus is present when “two or three” of His disciples are gathered together.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see another promise of Jesus to His disciples. When “two or three” of His believers are “gathered together”, Jesus is there among them. In other words, Jesus is present in His church. God desires to be among people through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord” and assemble with other believers, Jesus is always right there among them.

Next time Matthew shares how Peter asks Jesus, “how oft shall my brother sin against me, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
