A Maid of the High Priest - Mark 14:66

Mark wrote how the “high priest” declared at the trial of Jesus, “You have heard the blasphemy: what think you? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands”, and in chapter fourteen and verse sixty-six of his book, Mark shared, “as Peter was beneath in the palace, there came one of the maids of the high priest” where we read:

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there came one of the maids of the high priest:

The verse reads, “And as Peter was beneath in the palace, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And as Peter” which means “and while and during the time when Jesus' disciple Peter whose name means a little rock or stone” “was beneath” or “was in a place below and down under” “in the palace” which means “within the uncovered courtyard of the house”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciple “Peter” was below where Jesus was being “tried” in the “courtyard” of the house.

The verse goes on to say, “there came one of the maids of the high priest: Mark continued with the words, “there came” which means “there arose, appeared and showed forth” “one of the maids” or “a certain and particular young girl, damsel or female slave” “of the high priest” which means “belonging to the chief priest”. Mark shared how a “young female servant” of the “high priest” approached Peter.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we remember how Peter “followed” Jesus and the arresting crowd from “afar off”, and now he was seated near the fire of the enemies of Jesus. A “young female servant” who belonged to the “high priest” came near the area where Peter was sitting. We shall discover what this “female servant” does when she sees Peter, but for now let us remember how Jesus told Peter he would “deny” Him “three times” before rooster crowed “two times”. This is a continuation of the fulfillment of Jesus' words, and Peter's example serves as a important warning to those who attempt to “follow” Jesus at a distance and are inclined to “deny” Him.

Next time Mark shares how the “maid”, “saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And you also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
