The Two Disciples Tell the Others - Mark 16:13

After Jesus was crucified and buried Mark wrote, “when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country”, and in chapter sixteen and verse thirteen of his book, Mark shared how the two disciples, “went and told it unto the residue”, where we read:

And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

The verse reads,And they went and told it unto the residue:” Mark began with the words, “and they went” or “and the two disciples departed” “and told it” which means “and brought tidings, proclaimed and declared how they saw Jesus” “unto the residue” or “to the remainder of Jesus' disciples”. Mark shared how the “two disciples” to whom Jesus revealed Himself went back to the other “disciples” and “told” them what they saw.

The verse continues, “neither believed they them. Mark added the words, “neither believed” which means “yet not in any way trusted or placed confidence” “they them” or “did the disciples have confidence in the two disciples”. Mark shared how the “remainder” of Jesus' disciples did not “believe” what the “two disciples” told them.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we discover the response of the “two disciples” after seeing Jesus. They went immediately to share with Jesus' other disciples about seeing Him, however, the other “disciples” did not “believe” them. Though people saw Jesus alive and Jesus Himself told His disciples He would rise from the dead, His disciples did not “believe”. God desires everyone to believe and trust in His Son Jesus, and Jesus died for the sins of everybody. He rose from the grave to demonstrate God's willingness to “resurrect” every person who believes in Him and dies afterward. Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”.

Next time Mark shared how Jesus, “appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
