Pilate Releases Barabbas - Mark 15:15

Mark wrote, “Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will you then that I shall do unto him whom you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil has he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him”, and in chapter fifteen and verse fifteen of his book, Mark shared how Pilate, “released Barabbas unto them” where we read:

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus,

when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

The verse reads, “And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And so Pilate” which means “and therefore, wherefore and on that account the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified whose name means armed with a spear”, “willing to content the people” or “purposed, deliberate, minded and desiring to satisfy and meet the multitude”, “released Barabbas” which means “set free and dismissed Barabbas whose name means son of a father or master” “unto them” or “to the multitude”, “and delivered Jesus” which means “and gave over to the hands, betrayed, committed and commended the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. Mark shared how Pilate acquiesced to the multitude's request and gave them “Barabbas” and committed Jesus to the torturers.

The verse goes on to say, “... when he had scourged him, to be crucified. Mark continued with the word, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “he had scourged him” or “Pilate lashed Jesus with a whip or flagellum as a public punishment”, “to be crucified” which means “to be driven down with stakes, palisade, destroyed in the flesh and power and extinguished completely”. Mark shared how Pilate not only had Jesus “publicly whipped” but also delivered Jesus to be “hung upon a cross”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “persuasive influence” of the multitude convinced Pilate to allow “Barabbas” to be set free to them and Jesus to be “beaten, whipped” and “hung upon a cross”. Oh how the love of God is demonstrated in this process as He allowed His Only Begotten Son Jesus to endure these things of behalf of mankind. When people carefully consider all Jesus endured to provide “salvation” from the penalty of “sins”, they should yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Mark shares how, “the soldiers led him away into the call, called Praetorium”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
