Jesus Would Rebuild the Temple in Three Days - Mark 14:58

Mark wrote how those who captured Jesus led Him, “away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying, ...”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-eight of his book, Mark shared how the witnesses said, “we heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands”, where we read:

We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands,

and within three days I will build another made without hands.

The verse reads, “We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, ...”. Mark began with the words, “we heard him say” which means “these false witnesses were given the faculty of hearing, perceived and understood that Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I will destroy” or “Jesus would dissolve, disunite and demolish” “this temple” which refers to “the sacred place in Jerusalem” “that is made with hands” or “that was built and erected with skillful human hands”. Mark shared how the “false witnesses” began to share with the religious leaders how Jesus declared that He would “demolish” the “sacred worship temple” in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “...and within three days I will build another made without hands. Mark continued with the words, “and within three days” which means “and in three sunrises to sunsets” “I will build” or “Jesus would erect, restore and repair” “another made without hands” which refers to “another temple that is manufactured without using skillful human hands”. Mark shared how the “false witnesses” added that Jesus said He would “rebuild” the “sacred worship place” “in three days” without using “skillful human hands”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how these “false witnesses” did not understand what Jesus said and certainly did not know what He meant when He spoke about the “temple”. The apostle John tells us Jesus said, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up”, and John added, Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and will you rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body.” (See John 2:19-21). Though these “false witnesses” thought they had a condemning accusation against Jesus, they were “blind” to the truth. Many people today attempt to bring “false accusations” “against” Jesus, and yet, He loves them. He came to die for them, and when they open their hearts to “believe and trust” in Him, their eyes will be opened and their “false testimony” will be “forgiven”. Let all who read these words know and understand that Jesus gave His “temple”, His body, for them so they may be saved from their sins and live forever with God.

Next time Mark shares, “neither so did their witness agree”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
