Saluting Jesus as the King of the Jews - Mark 15:18

Mark wrote how, “Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, ...”, and in chapter fifteen and verse eighteen of his book, Mark shared the soldiers, “began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews” where we read:

And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

The verse reads, “And began to salute him, ...”. Mark began with the words, “and began” which means “and started and initiated” “to salute him” or “to greet, bid welcome, wish well and receive Jesus joyfully”. Mark shared how the Roman soldiers started to mock Jesus by pretending to bid Him welcome and wish Him well as one would do to royalty.

The verse continues, “... Hail, King of the Jews! Mark added the word, “Hail” which means “rejoice exceedingly, be well, thrive and God speed”, “King of the Jews” or “leader, prince, commander and lord of the people who belong to the Jewish nation”. Mark shared how the Roman soldiers mocked Jesus by greeting Him in a positive manner as they called Him the Jew's King.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see the continuation of the horrific ridicule the Roman soldiers gave to Jesus. They began to shout out to Him the greeting as a “King” would receive as they acknowledged His “royalty and rule” over the “Jewish” people. Though they were mocking Jesus, what the Roman soldiers did not realize is that Jesus is indeed the “King of the Jews”, and He is the “Savior” of the world as well. God the Father sent His Son Jesus to be ruler over all of mankind, and because He suffered in this manner on behalf of every person, those who receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will have “everlasting life” with God. Those who do not shall find themselves as blind as these Roman soldiers who “mock and ridicule” Jesus, who is the Only Begotten Son of God”.

Next time Mark shares how the soldiers, “smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
