A Young Man in a White Garment - Mark 16:5

Mark wrote, “when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint” Jesus' body. Mark continued, “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great”, and in chapter sixteen and verse five of his book, Mark shared how the women saw, “the stone was rolled away” where we read:

And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

The verse reads, “And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, ...” Mark began with the words, “and entering into the sepulcher” or “and going in to the tomb or grave”, “they saw a young man sitting” which means “the women observed a youthful attendant or servant” “on the right side” or “at the right side of the tomb”. Mark shared how the women came into the empty grave of Jesus and “saw” a youthful man who was seated at the “right side” of the tomb.

The verse continues, “... clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. Mark added the words, “clothed in a long white garment” which means “who wore a long white colored robe or fitting gown”; “and they were affrighted” or “and the women were afraid, alarmed and struck with terror”. Mark shared how the women noticed the young man was wearing a “long white robe”, and the sight of him terrified them greatly.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the women who went to “anoint” the body of Jesus were surprised to not only to see the “stone rolled away”, but also as they entered Jesus' tomb, they observed a young man who was wearing a long white robe. The sight of the young man startled them greatly, and they were filled with terror. We can imagine how afraid and somewhat dismayed they were as Jesus was not in the tomb. God's plan for the resurrection of Jesus was fulfilled, and the announcement of His resurrection was at hand. God raised Jesus from the dead to provide the promise of “everlasting life” for anyone who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus. Let all who consider the sight of these women yield their lives to Jesus who alone is able to forgive sins and provide eternal life with the “everlasting” God.

Next time Mark shares how the young man said to the women, “you seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
