The Second Crowing of the Rooster - Mark 14:72

Mark wrote how, “Peter was beneath in the palace” when “there came one of the maids of the high priest. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And you also were with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilaean, and your speech agrees thereto. But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom you speak”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seventy-two of his book, Mark shared how, “the second time the cock crew” where we read:

And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

The verse reads, “And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice.”. Mark began with the words, “and the second time” which means “and the next time, place and rank after the first” “the cock crew” or “the rooster cried aloud with a crowing sound”. “And Peter” which means “and Jesus' disciple named Peter which means a little rock or stone” “called to mind the word” or “recollected and remembered the saying, speech and discourse” “that Jesus said unto him” which means “that the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to Peter”, “Before the cock crow twice” or “in advance of the rooster crying aloud with a crowing sound two times”, “you shall deny me thrice” which means “you, Peter, will affirm that he had no acquaintance or connection with Jesus three times”. Mark shared how the “rooster crowed” again, and Peter was “reminded” of Jesus' words concerning Him “denying” Him “three times” before “the cock crowed twice”.

The verse continues, “And when he thought thereon, he wept. Mark added the words, “And when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he thought thereon” or “Peter attended to, reflected, lay and cast his mind toward what Jesus said”, “he wept” which means “Peter mourned, lamented, sobbed and bewailed as a sign of pain and grief. Mark shared how Peter “mourned greatly” when he “reflected” upon what Jesus told him.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see the fulfillment of the words Jesus told to His disciple Peter. Although Peter swore he would never “deny” Him, Peter “denied” Jesus three times and the “rooster crowed” for the “second time” thereafter. God knows us. He knows how were really are and how we would respond in certain circumstances. He knows our imperfections even as He knew Peter's. Peter's response to remembering what Jesus said is a posture that all should take before Jesus as he “mourned and wept in grief” over realizing what he was really like. This was God sent His Son Jesus because every person is in need of a “Savior and Lord”, and those who truly “think on these things” will discover their need for One who is greater than their ability to align with His perfect way.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Mark shares how the “religious leaders”, “bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
