Paul
the apostle instructed the church members in Corinth to, “Examine
yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves”,
and he added the question, “Know you not your own selves,
how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
In chapter
thirteen and verse six of Second Corinthians, Paul told the church
members, “I trust that you shall know that we are not
reprobates.” where we read:
But
I trust that you shall know that we are not reprobates.
The
verse begins, “But
I trust that you shall know...”
Paul
began with the word, “but”
or “nevertheless, nonetheless and moreover” “I
trust”
which means “Paul hoped and waited with joy and full confidence”
“you shall
know”
which means “the church members would get a knowledge of, perceive,
feel, understand and be acquainted with”. Paul “hoped” the
church members would “understand and perceive” that which he is
going to declare.
The
verse goes on to say, “...that
we are not reprobates.”
Paul
continued with the words, “that
we are not”
which means “that Paul and his companions were not” “reprobates”
or “unfit, unproved and spurious”. Paul “hoped” the church
members knew he and his companions were not as “unfit and spurious”
people.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we understand his “hope”
and desire for the church members not to believe they were “unfit
and unproved” as leaders in the church. Paul was God's “apostle”
or “sent out one” to the Gentiles, and the Corinthians were the
beneficiaries of his calling. Jesus Christ uses people to share His
“gospel” with others, and those who truly follow Him will never
be known as “unfit or unproved”. Let all who read these words
know what being a “reprobate” means, and may they keep
themselves from being known as one.
Next
time Paul
tells the church members, “I
pray to God that you do no evil”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
