How Were Your Eyes Opened? - John 9:10

The apostle John wrote,as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night comes, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. The neighbors therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he, and in chapter nine and verse ten of his book John shared how the neighbors ask, “how were your eyes opened?” where we read:

Therefore said they unto him, How were your eyes opened?

The verse reads, “Therefore said they unto him, ... John began with the word, “Therefore” which means “then, wherefore, consequently and on this account” “said they unto him” or “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the neighbors and people around the blind man” the following question. John shared how the people who saw the “blind man” who was now able to see asked him the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... How were your eyes opened? John continued with the words, “how were your eyes” which means “in what way were your physical eyes” “opened” or “unfastened or unstopped”? John shared the people around the man who was formally “blind” asked him “in what way his eyes” were “unstopped or unfastened”.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we discover the curiosity of the crowd around the man who was formally “blind”. They wanted to know “how” the opening of his eyes occurred. Most people who see a major change in a person, especially physically, want to know how this happened, and this group of people were no different. God loves people, and His desire is to “change” them from their wicked ways to His righteousness through His Son Jesus. When they yield their lives to Jesus, they are removed from “spiritual blindness” and are able to perceive the way God wants them to live. Not only are they able to “see” these things, but God provides the power through His Holy Spirit to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him. Let all who read these words submit their “spiritual eyes” to Jesus and see as He wants them to see.

Next time John shares how the formally blind man says, “a man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
