The apostle John wrote, “as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night comes, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world”, and in chapter nine and verse six of his book John shared how Jesus, “spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle” where we read:
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle,
and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
The verse reads, “When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, ...” John began with the words, “When he had thus spoken” which means “at the time and moment Jesus completed His speaking, uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “he spat on the ground” or “Jesus spit upon the earth beneath Him”, “and made clay” which means “and fashioned, made ready, produced and acquired mud like a potter uses” “of the spittle” or “with the saliva”. John shared how Jesus finished speaking to His “disciples” and “spit” upon the ground, mixed the earth with His saliva and made a paste of mud.
The verse goes on to say, “... and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,” John continued with the words, “and he anointed” which means “and Jesus spread or smeared” “the eyes of the blind man” or “the physical eyes belonging to the male human who was birthed without eyesight” “with the clay” which means “with the wet mud”. John shared how Jesus “spread” the “wet mud” upon the “blind man's” eyes.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus stopped speaking to His disciples concerning being “the light of the world” and began to make a “mud paste” to put upon the “blind man's” eyes. Jesus would prove He was who He claimed to be, and we shall see how He helps this man in our next few verses. Jesus is the answer to every person's life, especially spiritually, and when they yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Those who are wise will submit their “spiritual blindness” to Jesus' healing touch.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the blind man, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
