The apostle John wrote how, “Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, ...”, and in chapter eight and verse four John shared how the Pharisees tell Jesus, “Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act” where we read:
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
The verse reads, “They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, ...” John began with the words, “they say unto him” which means “the religious leaders known as scribes and Pharisees uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “Master” or “teacher”, “this woman” which means “this female human being” “was taken in adultery” or “was seized upon, overtaken and caught in the act of adultery”. John shared how the “religious leaders” told Jesus how the “woman” was caught in “adultery”.
The verse continues, “... in the very act.” John added the words, “in the very act” which means “in the perpetuation and actual deed of adultery”. John shared how the “religious leaders” wanted Jesus to know the “woman” was “caught” while performing the actual “act” of “adultery”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how these “religious leaders” were relentless in their attempt to condemn this woman and have Jesus respond to their findings. Jesus is far superior to anyone who attempts to “trap” Him or accuse Him falsely, and we shall see how He responds to these “scribes and Pharisees” in our next few verses. For now let it suffice us to understand Jesus is the “Messiah, Christ and Son of God”, and He is willing to “forgive” anyone who humbles themselves before Him and asks. Let all who read these words come to Jesus regardless of their “sins” and find Him willing to be their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares how the Pharisees tell Jesus, “Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
