John the apostle wrote how Jesus saw a man who was born blind and healed him by making clay, anointing his eyes and instructing him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The “blind man's” neighbors “brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind”, and after much questioning of the blind man and his parents, the formally blind man proclaimed, “Why herein is a marvelous thing, that you know not from where he is, and yet he has opened my eyes. Now we know that God hears not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and does his will, him he hears. Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-three of his book John shared how the formally blind man says, “if this man were not of God, he could do nothing” where we read:
If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
The verse reads, “If this man were not of God, ...” John began with the words, “If this man” which means “whether this particular and certain male human being” “were not of God” or “was not from the Godhead” the following would not occur. John shared how the formally blind man concluded the following would not be possible if Jesus was not from “God”.
The verse continues, “... he could do nothing.” John added the words, “he could do” which means “he, Jesus, would be capable and able to perform, make ready and produce” “nothing” or “not one thing”. John shared how the formally blind man reasoned that Jesus would be incapable of “performing” anything if He was not from “God”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how wise this formally blind man became after He thought about the miracle he experienced. Jesus must have come from God to perform such a wonderful act, and no one had ever heard of such a thing being done before. God sent His Son Jesus to the world with power to do wonderful miracles never seen before so people would recognize Him as the Son of God and the Messiah. Everyone was “spiritually blind” in their sins, and Jesus came to “give sight” to all who believe and trust in Him. Those who are wise will examine the works and words of Jesus and receive Him into their hearts and minds to be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God.
Next time John shares how the Pharisees answered, “you were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
