The apostle John wrote how Jesus saw a man who was born blind and healed him by making clay, putting the clay in his eyes, and having him wash in the pool of Siloam. The “blind man's” neighbors “brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keeps not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. They said unto the blind man again, What do you say of him, that he has opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? how then does he now see? His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-four of his book John shared how the religious leaders, “again called they the man that was blind” where we read:
Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise:
we know that this man is a sinner.
The verse reads, “Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise:” John began with the words, “Then again called they” which means “therefore, wherefore and on this account yet another time sent forth, beckoned and summoned the Pharisees” “the man that was blind” or “the male human being who was without sight”, “and said unto him” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and directed the man who was formally blind”, “Give God the praise” or “bestow, deliver, extend, furnish and supply to the Godhead the honor, glory, splendor and brightness”. John shared how the Pharisees summoned the man who was formally blind another time and directed him to “bestow upon God” the “honor, glory and splendor” for what was done to him.
The verse goes on to say, “we know that this man is a sinner.” John continued with the words, “we know” which means “we, the religious leaders known as Pharisees, perceive, ascertain, understand and are certain” “that this man is a sinner” or “that this male human being, Jesus, exists as one who misses the mark, errs, makes mistakes, is sinful and violates the law of God”. John shared how the Pharisees concluded that Jesus was a “sinner” who violates the “law of God”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover the Pharisees' errant opinion of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah, yet these religious leaders deemed Him to be a “sinner” among them. Many people form a wrong conclusion about Jesus, and they miss the very “Savior and Lord” of the world whom God the Father sent. God is certainly to be “praised” for His blessings and goodness to mankind, and His greatest “miracle” is to save people from their sins by the death of His Son Jesus on the cross. Those who believe and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with His Father God. Those who do not believe Him have concluded Him to be something other than the living Son of God, and woe be to their supposition.
Next time John shares how the formally blind man tells religious leaders, “whether he be a sinner or not, I know not: one thing I know, whereas I was blind, now I see”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
