The apostle John wrote how Jesus saw a man who was born blind and healed him by making clay, anointing his eyes, and having him wash in the pool of Siloam. The “blind man's” neighbors “brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keeps not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. They said unto the blind man again, What do you say of him, that he has opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? how then does he now see? His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: These words spoke his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-five of his book John shared how the formally blind man told religious leaders, “whether he be a sinner or not, I know not: one thing I know, whereas I was blind, now I see” where we read:
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or not, I know not:
one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
The verse reads, “He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or not, I know not:” John began with the words, “He answered and said” which means “the formally blind man responded and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “whether he be a sinner or not” or “if he, Jesus, exists as one who misses the mark, errs, makes mistakes or violates the law of God or not”, “I know not” which means “I, the formally blind man, have no understanding, perception, knowledge or awareness”. John shared how the “formally blind man” told the Pharisees he was unaware of whether or not Jesus was a “sinner”.
The verse continues, “one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” John added the words, “one thing I know” which means “a certain and particular thing I, the formally blind man, understand, perceive, have knowledge of and am aware”, “that, whereas I was blind” or “because, since and on account that, being that I, the formally blind man, was at one time without vision and sight”, “now I see” which means “at this time and hour I, the formally blind man, have vision and sight”. John shared how the “formally blind man” told the Pharisees that he was fully aware that at one time he was without sight, but at this time he could “see”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how this “formally blind man” concentrated upon what he “knew” rather than the when, how and where it all occurred. This man experienced a miracle of Jesus, and he knew his life was altered by what happened to him. God is in the life changing business, and although a person may have been “spiritually blind” at one time in their life, they have the opportunity through Jesus Christ to “see” and have their life changed. God loves people, and those who have given their hearts and lives to Jesus know the change He has made within them. Those who are wise will lay aside all the questions and wonders about Jesus and simply believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”. Forgiveness of sins and eternal life with God await all who yield their lives to this wonderful man called Jesus.
Next time John shares how the religious leaders ask the blind man, “How opened he your eyes?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
