John the apostle wrote how Jesus told the people who believed on Him, “If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-five of his book John shared how Jesus told His believers, “the servant abides not in the house for ever” where we read:
And the servant abides not in the house for ever: but the Son abides ever.
The verse reads, “And the servant abides not in the house for ever:” John began with the words, “and the servant” which means “and the slave, man of servile condition or bondman” “abides not in the house” or “does not live, dwell or inhabit the home or dwelling place” “forever” which means “to the unbroken age, perpetuity of time or eternity”. John shared how Jesus said a “servant” does not “live” or “dwell” within a “home” for all of eternity.
The verse continues, “but the Son abides for ever.” John added the words, “but the Son” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the Son of God who is Jesus” “abides for ever” or “lives, dwells and inhabits life to the unbroken age, perpetuity of time and eternity”. John shared how Jesus declared that He “lives, dwells and inhabits life” for all perpetuity of time and eternity.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how the role of a “servant” is temporary, whereas the life of Jesus continues for all eternity. Jesus Christ is “eternal” in nature, and people will live in their physical bodies for only a short number of years compared to eternity. Jesus came to grant eternal life and forgiveness of sins to every person who believes and trusts in Him. Jesus is “eternal”, and those who are wise will align with Him and live forever and ever with Him and His Father God in Heaven.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His believers, “if the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
