The apostle John wrote, “as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night comes, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. The neighbors therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. Therefore said they unto him, How were your eyes opened? He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight”, and in chapter nine and verse twelve of his book John shared how the neighbors ask the formally blind man, “where is he?” where we read:
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
The verse reads, “Then said they unto him, Where is he?” John began with the words, “then said they unto him” which means “at that time uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the neighbors and friends to the blind man”, “where is he” or “in what place or location is Jesus”? John shared how the “neighbors and friends” who knew the formally “blind man” wanted to know where Jesus was.
The verse goes on to say, “He said, I know not.” John continue with the words, “He said” which means “the formally blind man uttered, declared and answered” “I know not” or “I, the formally blind man, do not perceive, ascertain, observe or am aware”. John shared the formally blind man told the “neighbors and friends” he was unaware of where Jesus was located.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus disappeared from the “blind man” once He healed him. Though Jesus performed this wonderful miracle, He did not make an open display for even this man to know Him. God works in mysterious ways, and often He will perform works in a person's life without them knowing where He is. Jesus came to the earth to bring salvation to mankind by His death upon the cross, and when He was raised from the dead three days later, He made access to everlasting life with His Father God. Those who believe and trust in Jesus may not “see” His work or “know” from where He comes, but their lives will be altered forever as their “spiritual eyes” are opened to the works and ways of Almighty God.
Next time John shares how the neighbors “brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
