You Do the Deeds of Your Father - John 8:41

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people who believed on Him, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham's seed; but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill me, a man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham”, and in chapter eight and verse forty-one of his book John shared how Jesus told the religious leaders, “you do the deeds of your father” where we read:

You do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication;

we have one Father, even God.

The verse reads, “You do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; John began with the words, “you do the deeds” which means “you, Jewish people and religious leaders perform, produce and make ready the business, employment, acts and undertakings” “of your father” or “belonging to your, Jewish people and religious leaders', male progenitor and ancestor”. “Then said they unto him” which means “at that time uttered, declared and proclaimed the Jewish people and religious leaders to Jesus”, “we be not born” or “we are in no way procreated, regenerated and begotten” “of fornication” which means “from illicit sexual intercourse”. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people and religious leaders” who were questioning Him that they performed and produced the “acts, works and undertakings” of their “male progenitor”, and they responded to Him by saying they were not “birthed” from an “illicit” sexual relationship.

The verse continues, “we have one Father, even God. John added the words, “we have one Father” which means “we, Jewish people and religious leaders” hold, own and possess only one particular male progenitor and ancestor”, “even God” or “indeed the Godhead”. John shared how the “Jewish people and religious leaders” told Jesus they only had “one Father” and that was “God” Himself.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how there was a dispute over the “origin” of the “works and deeds” that were performed by Jesus and these “Jewish people”. Jesus told them His source of “works” were from God the Father, and their works were from their “earthly” “Fathers”. They argued that they received their actions from their “Father” who was God. The idea was the “Jewish people” believed themselves to be performing their “deeds” in the “right” measure, and Jesus was not. They were wrong, and implied themselves to be better than Jesus because they did not come forth from an “illicit” sexual relationship like He did. Anyone who desires to have a personal relationship with God must go through His Son Jesus Christ, and God wants everyone to come to Him. When they submit to Jesus, they shall perform their “deeds” by the power and source of God the Father above.

Next time John shares how Jesus told the religious leaders, “if God were your Father, you would love me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
