John the apostle wrote how Jesus told the people who believed on Him, “If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abides not in the house for ever: but the Son abides ever”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-six of his book John shared how Jesus told His believers, “if the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed” where we read:
If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
The verse reads, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ...” John began with the words, “If the Son therefore” which means “whether and when the Son of God, Jesus, wherefore, then and on this account” “shall make you free” or “will set you at liberty from the dominion of sin” the following shall occur. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people” if He “liberated” them from the “dominion of sin” the following would happen to them.
The verse goes on to say, “... you shall be free indeed.” John continued with the words, “you shall be free” which means “you, Jewish people, will be liberated from the dominion of sin” “indeed” or “truly, in reality and as a point of fact”. John shared Jesus said the “Jewish people” who were “set at liberty from sin by Him” would “truly, in reality and as a point of fact” be liberated.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus is the One to liberate people from the power and dominion of “sin”. This is why He came to the earth. People are sinners, and they are bound, enslaved and captured by their sinful ways. Jesus came to “set them free” from “sins”, and when He died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice, without flaw, blame or sin (See 2 Corinthians 5:21), He made access for every person to be forgiven of their sins by God. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus and ask Him to “set them free” from the bondage of sin and be set “free” indeed.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the Jewish people and religious leaders, “I know that you are Abraham's seed; but you seek to kill me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
