The apostle John wrote, “Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”, and in chapter eight and verse thirteen John shared how the Pharisees told Jesus, “you bear record of yourself; your record is not true” where we read:
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, You bear record of yourself; your record is not true.
The verse reads, “The Pharisees therefore said unto him, You bear record of yourself;” John began with the words, “The Pharisees therefore” which means “the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life wherefore, then and consequently” “said unto him” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “you bear record of yourself” which means “you, Jesus, testify and give a good report pertaining to your own self”. John shared how the “religious leaders” known as the “Pharisees” told Jesus He was “testifying” about His own self.
The verse goes on to say, “your record is not true.” John continued with the words, “your record” which means “your testimony or good report” “is not true” or “is not truthful”. John shared how the Pharisees continued to tell Jesus how His “testimony” concerning Himself was “false and untruthful”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Pharisees” continued to confront Jesus as they reacted to Him telling them He was “the light of the world”. They were troubled because He “testified” about Himself, and they accused Him of “bearing witness” of Himself in a “false manner”. God sent His Son to be “the way, the truth and the life” (See John 14:6), and anyone who yields their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Jesus declared the “true witness” about Himself, and those who are wise will submit their lives to the truth.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the Pharisees, “though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
