John the apostle wrote, “Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, You bear record of yourself; your record is not true. Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know from where I came, and where I go; but you cannot tell where I come from, and where I go. You judge after the flesh; I judge no man. And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me”, and in chapter eight and verse seventeen of his book John shared how Jesus told the Pharisees their law says, “the testimony of two men is true” where we read:
It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
The verse reads, “It is also written in your law, ...” John began with the words, “it is also written” which means “the following phrase is even so and indeed delineated or formed in letters upon a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “in your law” or “within the Jewish people and leaders' rule producing a state approved of God”. John shared how Jesus referred to the “scriptures” as He proclaimed the following words “written” therein.
The verse continues, “... that the testimony of two men is true.” John added the words, “that the testimony” which means “because, since and on account that the witness, record and report” “of two men” or “belonging to two people whether male or female” “is true” which means “exists as truthful”. John shared how Jesus referred to the “scripture” that declared the “witness or report” of “two people” was considered to be “truthful”. (See Deuteronomy 17:6 and 19:15)
When we consider John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus drew the Jewish people and “Pharisees” attention toward their own “scriptures” which declared the “witness” of “two people” to be truthful. Jesus will tell why these scriptures are important in our next verse, but for now let it suffice us to know Jesus often referred to the “scriptures” as a basis for His functioning in the world. Jesus knew He was the “Messiah and Christ” of God, and His purpose was to “save” people from the penalty of sins. He died on the cross as the “truthful witness” of God's plan of “salvation”, and anyone who humbles themselves before Him, asks for forgiveness and receives Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He will not only “forgive” their sins, but also grant them everlasting life with Him and His Father God.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the Pharisees, “myself, and the Father … bear witness of me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
