In the beginning of Psalms chapter four David prayed, “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: you have enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. O you sons of men, how long will you turn my glory into shame? how long will you love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah”, and in chapter four and verse three David said, “the LORD has set apart him that is godly for himself” where we read,
But know that the LORD has set apart him that is godly for himself:
the LORD will hear when I call unto him.
The verse begins, “But know that the LORD has set apart him that is godly for himself:” David began with the words, “But know” or “however, moreover, nonetheless and notwithstanding understand, perceive, discriminate and distinguish” “that the LORD” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “has set apart him” or “has marked out, separated and distinguished the person whether male or female” “that is godly” which means “who exists as faithful, kind, holy and pious” “for himself” or “on behalf of His own self”. David shared how those reading and singing his words should understand that Jehovah God has separated and marked out the “faithful and pious” people for His own self.
The verse goes on to say, “the LORD will hear when I call unto him.” David continued with the words, “the LORD” or “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “will hear” which means “shall listen to, perceive, understand, pay attention to and give heed” “when I call unto him” or “at the time and moment I, David, summon, cry out and invite him, Jehovah God”. David wrote how Jehovah God will listen to him at the time and moment he summons and invites Him to do so.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David knew God separates and distinguishes among people who live in a “faithful, kind and pious” way. God desires to have a personal intimate relationship with every person, and because their own righteousness falls far short of His glory, everyone is in need of His Son Jesus Christ. (See Romans 3:23) Only Jesus paid the price for the sins of mankind, and only Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after He died on the cross. When we yield to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, listen to us when we invite Him into our lives and grant us everlasting life with Him. Let us give Him praise, honor and respect for hearing us when we call.
Next time David says, “Stand in awe, and sin not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
