The beloved physician Luke wrote how Paul was being kept under guard in Rome, and “when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse twenty-five of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “Paul had spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ...” where we read:
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word,
Well spoke the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers,
The verse begins, “And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when they agreed not among themselves” which means “and at the time and moment the Jewish people who came to where Paul was and listened to him were dissonant, inharmonious and at variance one with the other”, “they departed” or “the Jewish people went forth and left”, “after that Paul had spoken one word” which means “following the time when Paul, whose name means small or little, uttered, declared and proclaimed a single discourse, sentence or utterance”. Luke shared how the people who gathered themselves to “Paul” left him after he made the following statement.
The verse continues, “... Well spoke the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ...” Luke added the words, “Well spoke the Holy Ghost” which means “honorably, commendably and nobly uttered, declared and proclaimed the sacred, pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God who is coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son” “by Isaiah the prophet” or “through Isaiah, whose name means Jehovah's help and was a famous Hebrew prophet who prophesied in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah and was a man who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what he received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “unto our fathers” which means “to the male generators or ancestors of the people of Israel”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to the words of the “Holy Spirit of God” who declared the following words through the “prophet Isaiah”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the people who gathered themselves to “Paul” and listened to him speak about the Kingdom of God and Jesus Christ His Son were in disagreement over whether to believe “Paul's” word or not. “Paul” employed the words of the “Holy Spirit” through the “prophet Isaiah” which we shall see in our next verse, but for now let us realize “Paul” understood there were some people among the group who did not believe him. God wants everyone to believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, however, not everyone will. God invites people to “come” to Him, be forgiven of their sins and enjoy eternal life with Him, and those who choose to walk away from His offer bring upon themselves eternal judgment where they shall forever be separated from God when they leave this world.
Next time Luke shares how, “Go unto this people, and say, Hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and not perceive”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
