The beloved physician Luke wrote how he, Paul, and others with him were shipwrecked and swam to “the island” that “was called Melita”, “and after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux. And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days”, and in chapter twenty-eight and verse thirteen of the book of Acts Luke shared, “from there we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium” where we read:
And from there we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium:
and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
The verse begins, “And from there we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium:” Luke began with the words, “and from there” which means “and apart from the island of Melita” “we fetched a compass” or “we, Luke, Paul and the others on the ship wandered about, navigated and sailed around”, “and came to Rhegium” which means “and arose and appeared to Rhegium whose name means breach and was an Italian town situated on the Bruttian coast, just at the southern entrance of the Straits of Messina”. Luke shared how he, Paul and the others sailed in the ship from Alexandria around to the Italian town named “Rhegium”.
The verse goes on to say, “and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:” Luke continued with the words, “and after one day” which means “and following one sunrise to sunset” “the south wind blew” or “the stream of air from the southern direction arose”, “and we came the next day to Puteoli” which means “and we, Luke, Paul and the others on the ship arose and appeared the following day to Puteoli whose name means sulfurous springs and was a city of Campania, in Italy, situated on the Bay of Naples”. Luke shared how a “day” passed and the wind from the south blew upon them which directed them toward the city of “Puteoli” in Italy.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we continue to learn about the voyage of “Paul” and the others with him to the city of “Rome”. This time the south wind blew as they came to “Rhegium” and onward toward “Puteoli”. “Paul” was nearing his destination even as God promised him through the angel, and the people there would hear the gospel of Jesus Christ very soon. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and led by the Heavenly Father God and His Holy Spirit throughout the days of their lives. God's wants everyone to be “saved”, led by His Holy Spirit and blessed to live with Him in Heaven throughout all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how, “we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
