No Faithfulness in Their Mouth - Psalms 5:9

In Psalms chapter five David wrote “Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before my face”, and in Psalms chapter five and verse nine David wrote, “there is no faithfulness in their mouth” where we read,

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness;

their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue.

The verse begins, “For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness;” David began with the words, “For there is no faithfulness” which means “because, since, surely, indeed and on account that there exists not any enduring security, establishment and steadfastness” “in their mouth” or “within the enemies of David's orifices for speech”; “their inward part” which means “the seat, thought and emotion of David's enemies” “is very wickedness” or “exists as a chasm of destruction, ruin and calamity”. David shared how there was not any “security or steadfastness” within his enemies because the “core of their being” or “souls” were filled with “destruction, ruin and calamity”.

The verse goes on to say, “their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue.” David continued with the words, “their throat” or “the neck or swallowing part” “is an open sepulcher” which means “exist as a free, loosened and engraved grave or tomb”; “they flatter” or “the enemies of David divide, share, plunder, allot, apportion, impart and assign” “with their tongue” which means “by the use of the enemies of David's physical tongue as used for speech”. David wrote how the “throats” of his enemies were like tombs that were open as they plunder and divide with their speeches.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn about David's assessment of his enemies. Their “souls” were so corrupt and unsteady that they were filled with corruption, death and plundering speech. These were “evil and wicked hearted people” who had no personal relationship with God. This is why so many people are able to do so many wicked and evil things. Their hearts are not right before God. Paul the apostle wrote, “there is none righteous, no, not one” (See Romans 3:10), and “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23). The capacity for being an enemy of God is within every person. God sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who humbles themselves before Him, asks for His forgiveness and admits the wickedness and evil within their hearts will be forgiven of their sins, granted eternal life and cleansed from the evil within them. God loves us, and we give Him praise and honor because He knows we are like these enemies of David and yet, He sent His Son Jesus to die in our place that we may live with Him forever.

Next time David says, “Destroy … them, O God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
