King David wrote in the first chapter of the book of Psalms, “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law does he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper”, and in chapter one and verse four of the book of Psalms David began to share a contrast to the blessed man as he wrote about, “the ungodly” where we read,
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
The verse begins, “The ungodly are not so:”. David began with the words, “the ungodly” or “the wicked, guilty of sin, hostile to God and criminal” “are not so” which means “do not bear fruit in their season”. David shared how people who are “wicked and guilty of sin” do not bear fruit like the blessed person.
The verse goes on to say, “but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.” David continued with the words, “but are like the chaff” or “nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover exist in likeness to the winnowed, threshed and inedible portion of the wheat” “which the wind drives away” which means “that the stream of air shakes or tosses to and fro”. David wrote how people who are “ungodly” are similar to the inedible “chaff” from the wheat stalk that the “wind” blows away.
When we think through these words, we learn how David contrasted the person who is “blessed” with the “ungodly person”. Whereas the “blessed man” would be “oh how happy”, meditate in the law of God both day and night, be like a “tree planted by a stream of water” and have everything they do prosper, the “ungodly” person would be “blown away” like the inedible “chaff” found in the wheat grain. People who winnowed grain would gather the wheat, take it to a threshing floor and toss it upwards within a blanket into a stream of air that would blow away all the “chaff”. This allowed the wheat grain to fall back to the blanket below. In other words, the works and deeds of the “ungodly person” will be “blown” into nothingness. God's desire is for people to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who will provide them with forgiveness of sins, eternal life and “fruitful” works that will last forever and ever. Let us desire to be like the “blessed man” and give praise unto God who will help us to never be acquainted with the “chaff-like” ways of the “ungodly”.
Next time David shares how, “the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
