The second chapter of the Psalms was written by King David of Israel and is what is known as a Messianic Psalm and speaks of the glorious Kingdom Age when Jesus Christ will reign upon the earth. In chapter two and verse one of the book of Psalms David asked, “why do the heathen rage” where we read,
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
The verse begins, “Why do the heathen rage, ...”. David began with the words, “Why do the heathen” or “for what reason and cause do the unbelieving nations which are usually non-Hebrew descendants of Abraham” “rage” which means “conspire and plot to be in a tumult or commotion”. King David asked for a reason and cause that the unbelieving nations of the world would conspire and plot such a commotion as follows.
The verse continues, “... and the people imagine a vain thing?” David added the words, “and the people” or “and the nations or communities” “imagine” which means “moan, growl, groan, mutter, meditate, devise and plot” “a vain thing” or “an empty, idle and worthless idea”? David questioned the reason unbelieving nations and communities would “meditate upon, devise and plot” such an empty idea that will be presented in our next verse.
When we think through the words in the beginning verse of this Messianic Psalm, we learn how people on the earth are questioned for their devising a plan to rid themselves of God's Messiah Jesus. The apostle Peter referred to this verse as he prayed in the book of Acts, “Who by the mouth of your servant David has said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?” (See Acts 4:25) Although there are many who refuse and reject Jesus as the Christ and Son of God today, there will be a time when nations and communities gather themselves against Him with the idea of being “rid” of Him once and for all. We shall see what their campaign will lead to in our future verses, but for now, let us give praise to Jehovah God who spoke of these things in advance so that we may give our attention to Him. God is over all the rulers of the world, and even when they act in opposition to Him, He maintains control. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross and be the “Savior and Lord” of the world so people could be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. No individual or nation will stop His purposes for mankind, and all who are wise yield to His Son Jesus to align with His power over all.
Next time David asks, “rulers” and “kings of the earth take counsel together against the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
