The LORD Will Bless the Righteous - Psalms 5:12

In Psalms chapter five David wrote, “let all those that put their trust in you rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because you defend them: let them also that love your name be joyful in you”, and in Psalms chapter five and verse twelve David wrote, “For you, LORD, will bless the righteous” where we read,

For you, LORD, will bless the righteous; with favor will you compass him as with a shield.

The verse begins, “For you, LORD, will bless the righteous;” David began with the words, “For you, LORD” which means “because, since and on account that you, Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “will bless the righteous” or “will salute, congratulate and praise the just, lawful, right and correct”. David said Jehovah God would congratulate and give honor to people who are just, lawful and correct.

The verse continues, “with favor will you compass him as with a shield.” David added the words, “with favor” or “by the use of pleasure, delight, goodwill and acceptance” “will you compass him” which means “will you, Jehovah God, surround, encircle and crown the righteous person” “as with a shield” or “with a buckler, hook or barb”. David wrote how Jehovah God would encircle the person who is righteous with His protective “shield”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David declared the LORD's blessing, favor and protection for people who are righteous or in correct standing with Him. God knows the heart of people, and He declared through the prophet Jeremiah, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (See Jeremiah 17:9). No one is righteous in their own merits because “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, (See Romans 3:23) and the penalty for sin is death, “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23). This is why God sent His Son into the world. Second Corinthians chapter five and verse twenty-one speaking of Jesus Christ God's Son says, “For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” In other words, the only way for a person to be “righteous” and be blessed with favor and honor from God as written by David is to receive Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let us give praise, honor and reverence to Jehovah God who alone provided the way for us to be congratulated and honored by Him.

Next time we begin another Psalm where David says, “O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
