In the first few verses of chapter one of the the book of Psalms, we saw where King David wrote, “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law does he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away”, and in chapter one and verse five of the book of Psalms David shared how, “the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous” where we read,
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
The verse begins, “Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, ...”. David began with the words, “therefore the ungodly” or “then, wherefore, upon the grounds, basis and account or because, on behalf of, for the sake of, notwithstanding, concerning and in the matter as regards to the wicked, guilty of sin, hostile to God and criminal” “shall not stand” which means “will not arise, be fixed, confirmed or established” “in the judgment” or “within the justice, ordinance, process, procedure and litigation”. David shared how people who are “wicked, hostile to God and criminal” will not be established or confirmed within the “justice, procedure and litigation” of God.
The verse continues, “... nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.” David added the words, “nor sinners” or “no and not in any way will offenders, sinful and guilty ones exist” “in the congregation” which means “within the gathering, assemblage, concourse, company or swarm” “of the righteous” or “pertaining to people who are lawful and just in conduct and character”. David wrote how those who are sinful and guilty will not be established in the place where the “lawful and just” exist.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the “end” will not be good for those who are “sinful, wicked and criminal”. They will not have a valid reason upon which to defend themselves when they are in the presence of God. They will not be where the “righteous” are, and this creates a great problem for all mankind. Romans chapter three and verse ten says, “there is none righteous, no, not one”, and Romans chapter three and verse twenty-three says, “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. Romans chapter six and verse twenty-three says, “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. In other words, every person is “ungodly”, and they need a “Savior” to rescue them from the pending judgment in which they shall not “stand”. God by His Holy Spirit inspired David to write the words in this verse because He desires to “rescue and save” every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect and righteous life, and He died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See 2 Corinthians 5:21) Anyone who believes and trusts in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. In other words, the only way to “stand” before the “judgment” of God is to have Jesus standing with us, and forever we shall give praise and honor to Him for providing a way to “stand” in His “judgment”.
Next time David shares how, “the LORD knows the way of the righteous”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
