Boards and Pieces of the Ship - Acts 27:44

The beloved physician Luke wrote how he, Paul, and others with him were sailing toward Rome, “and they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves. And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse forty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared about, “the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship” where we read:

And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship.

And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

The verse begins,And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. Luke began with the words, “and the rest” which means “and the remainder of the people on board the ship”, “some on boards” or “a few of the men on the ship floated on wooden boards from the ship”, “and some on broken pieces” which means “and others of the men on the ship floated on damaged parts and items” “of the ship” or “belonging to the sailing vessel or boat”. Luke shared how the remainder of the people who were on the ship who were unable to swim to land began to float on boards and damaged pieces of the boat.

The verse continues, “And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.” Luke added the words, “and so it came to pass” which means “and it happened and occurred”, “that they escaped” or “that everyone aboard the ship was kept, secured and rescued” “all safe to land” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the men on board were rescued, preserved and kept from danger by getting to the land and seashore”. Luke shared how everyone aboard the ship was kept safe and preserved as they made it to the seashore.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how all two hundred and seventy six men who were aboard the ship were rescued even as “Paul” previously told them. God gave some of them the ability to swim, and others floated upon boards and broken pieces of the ship to make it to land. The apostle Peter wrote, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (See 2 Peter 3:9), and God's desire is to “save” every person from everlasting separation and punishment for sins apart from Him. Jesus came to the world to die for the sins of every person, and anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words see this rescue of “Paul” and the others upon the ship as an example of how God wants to “save” everybody, and those who surrender to Jesus will be rescued forever and ever.

Next time we being a new chapter and see Luke share, “when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
