Destroy Them O God - Psalms 5:10

In Psalms chapter five David wrote, “Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue”, and in chapter five and verse ten of Psalms David wrote, “Destroy … them, O God” where we read,

Destroy you them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels;

cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against you.

The verse begins, “Destroy you them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels;” David began with the words, “Destroy you them” which means “offend, trespass and incriminate the enemies of David”, “O God” or “O ruler, judge, divine one and the True God”; “let them fall” which means “allow, permit and cause the enemies of David to be cast down, deserted, attacked and wasted away” “by their own counsels” or “through the means of the enemies' own personal plans, principles and devices”. David shared how he desired God to allow his enemies to be judged and incriminated by the means of their own plans and devises.

The verse continues, “cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against you.” David added the words, “cast them out” or “impel, thrust, drive away, banish and throw the enemies of David away” “in the multitude of their transgressions” which means “within the abundance and numerous amount of the enemies' rebellions, sins and trespasses”; “for they have rebelled” or “because, since, certainly, surely and on account that the enemies of David have been contentious, refractory and disobedient” “against you” which means “in opposition to you, God”. David asked the LORD God to banish his enemies in their numerous transgressions because they have been disobedient and contentious toward Him.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David turned his enemies over to the LORD God. Although David was a warrior, He knew God was the source of his victories over his foes, and he appealed to the LORD to “destroy” them and allow their own plans to put them to ruin. He wanted “God” to throw them away because of their “wickedness” and rebellion against Him. David knew God was his defense and protection, and when we encounter opposing foes, we can ask the LORD to intervene on our behalf. God loves people, and He desires to have an intimate, personal relationship with everyone. He sent His Son Jesus to save us from our sins so we can relate to Him and call upon Him when we face opposing situations and people. Let us give praise and honor to the LORD who is willing to redeem us and be our advocate before our enemies.

Next time David says, “let all those that put their trust in you rejoice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
