In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “Honor the LORD with your substance, and with the first-fruits of all your increase. So shall your barns be filled with plenty, and your presses shall burst out with new wine”, and in chapter three and verse eleven of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son despise not the chastening of the LORD” where we read,
My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
The verse begins, “My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD;”. Solomon began with the words, “my son” or “my, Solomon's, male offspring or prodigy”, “despise not the chastening” which means “do not reject, refuse, abhor or disdain the reproof, warning, instruction, correction and discipline” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Solomon told his son not to reject, refuse or abhor the correction and discipline of Jehovah God.
The verse goes on to say, “neither be weary of his correction:” Solomon continued with the words, “neither be weary” or “no and not in any way exist as loathing, grieved or in abhorrence” “of his correction” which means “pertaining to his, Jehovah God's, reproof, punishment, chiding or impeachment”. Solomon said his son should not be loathing or grieved over the reproof and punishment from Jehovah God.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew Jehovah God would correct and redirect his son, and he did not want his son to refuse God's direction. God loves us, and because He does, He disciplines and corrects us. (See Hebrews 12:16) We should understand that He does everything for our good, (See Romans 8:28) and He gave us His greatest good when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we receive Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us that even when He chastises us, we should never “despise” nor be “weary” by His correction.
Next time Solomon says, “whom the LORD loves he corrects”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
